This important client care workshop focuses on understanding and healing the effects of sexual abuse and other trauma on childbearing women. This course equips professionals working with childbearing women with the knowledge and skills to support pregnant, birthing, and postnatal clients who have experienced trauma. This one-of-a-kind training is the culmination of decades of collaboration between Penny Simkin, PT, CCE, CD(DONA), and Phyllis Klaus, MFT, LMSW. Together they also wrote the 2004 book of the same name, When Survivors Give Birth. Join prenatal health, mental health, and other allied providers to focus on the important and often overlooked topic of how trauma can impact the perinatal period.
An introduction for anyone who works with childbearing women and wants to learn about the impact of sexual trauma on the birth experience.

- Describe ways a woman’s history of CSA may mystify or upset her care provider.
- Define “childhood sexual abuse (CSA)", "child maltreatment", and "adverse childhood events (ACE)."
- Describe possible short and long-term effects of sexual abuse and other maltreatment on the child.
- Discuss the unique negative consequences of early sexual abuse, as opposed to other types of abuse on the childbearing woman.
- List common manifestations of CSA in adulthood.
- List common manifestations of CSA in pregnancy.
- Differentiate between helpful and non-helpful responses to a disclosure of child abuse.
- Describe the power differential between a maternity caregiver and the client.
- Quote the “Caregiver’s Motto.”
- Discuss the impact of the woman’s disclosure of her abuse in terms of how her caregiver cares for her.
- Describe the effects of domestic violence on mother and child, before and after birth.
- List common manifestations of CSA and other trauma during childbirth.
- List specific ways maternity care givers may help survivors during labor.
- List the essential elements of appropriate communication in a client-caregiver relationship.
- Demonstrate appropriate communication skills in simulated stressful situations.
- Describe how the birth plan can aid the survivor and the caregiving staff.
- List techniques for childbirth educators & caregivers to build confidence in abuse survivors.
- Differentiate among people’s usual coping styles.
- List common postpartum manifestations of CSA and other trauma.

Kicki Hansard is an author, experienced birth professional, and a When Survivors Give Birth Approved Educator. With over two decades of supporting women and couples, Kicki has a keen interest in working with survivors of sexual abuse and trauma. She believes that most people, including the women themselves, often don’t realise the profound impact trauma can have on the perinatal period. She is the author of Supporting Survivors of Sexual Abuse Through Pregnancy and Childbirth: A Guide for Midwives, Doulas and Other Healthcare Professionals and holds a degree in Psychology, Sociology, and Counselling.
Trained and mentored by Penny Simkin and Phyllis Klaus, co-authors of the ground-breaking book When Survivors Give Birth, Kicki is deeply committed to helping maternity professionals support trauma survivors. She provides training for doulas, midwives, nurses, therapists, and other perinatal professionals to ensure they have the skills needed to offer the best care possible.
Throughout her personal and professional journey, Kicki has witnessed the profound impact that the right kind of support can have during pregnancy, birth, and the postnatal period. She believes that equipping professionals to better understand and respond to trauma survivors is critical to improving outcomes in perinatal and public health. She is honoured to be part of this important work as a When Survivors Give Birth Educator.
